Lingua politica : Réflexions sur l’égalité linguistique

Abstract : This article reviews the citizens’ equality from a specific point of view: language. The author concludes that the speakers’ linguistic equality should be guaranteed in the same way as other basic social goods. In France, since the French Revolution, the citizens’ equality is understood thanks to their equal access to the French language. Elsewhere, in Europe or in multilingual democracies, those who establish language policies rather lean towards the respect of a linguistic diversity as a guarantee for democracy and for the equal respect of the speakers ; but today, in Europe in particular, they consider the choice of a unique language, which would be, in the end, a guarantee for the political participation of all citizens in supranational institutions.
