The (un)making of the Ukrainian Working Class : everyday politics and moral economy in a post-socialist city

The puzzle that animates this thesis consists of a particular kind of populist politicisation of workers in Ukraine:the imperative of engagement in political action aimed at bringing radical social change coexists with ademobilising stance that condemns all political participation as corrupt. In order to explain it, I ask how theUkrainian working class relates to the world of politics – both in the sense of objective relations mediated bysocial structures and mechanisms and in the sense of subjective attitude to the political domain. Thisethnographic exploration of the everyday politics of the workers focuses on the moral economy that constitutesthe class. The research is based on fieldwork conducted in the city of Kryvyi Rih between 2018 and 2021. Itconsisted of ethnographic interviews, participant observation at a factory, analysis of local press archives, anddigital ethnography. The analysis proceeds on multiple scales: from the political dynamics on the city level, itdescends to the level of workplace politics, and finally to individual strategies of economic survival andsymbolic distinction. I argue that the debilitating effect that the postsocialist socio-economic crisis had on theworkers’ political agency was exacerbated by the paternalist mechanisms that emerged to attenuate the crisis.At the same time, the “oligarchic democracy” of the 2000s brought a polarisation along identitarian axes.These processes shaped the options of political participation available for workers: programmatic agonisticpolitics is discarded in favour of antagonistic vision that closes the political space and spawns lay technocraticprojects of authoritarian anti-corruption.
L’énigme qui guide cette thèse porte sur la politisation des ouvriers en Ukraine : alors qu’ilsaspirent au niveau discursif à s’engager dans une action politique susceptible de provoquer unchangement social radical, ils associent dans leur vie quotidienne toute forme de participation àla vie politique à un acte de corruption, ce qui les démobilise. Pour expliquer cet apparentparadoxe, la thèse s’interroge sur le rapport des classes populaires ukrainiennes au politique.Cette exploration ethnographique du quotidien politique des ouvriers se concentre surl’économie morale qui forme cette classe sociale. La recherche est fondée sur un travail deterrain mené dans la ville de Kryvyi Rih entre 2018 et 2021. Celui-ci consiste en une séried’entretiens ethnographiques, d’observations participantes au sein d’une usine, d’analyse desarchives de la presse locale et d’une ethnographie numérique. L’analyse est multiscalaire :partant de la dynamique politique au niveau de la ville, elle descend au niveau de l’entreprisepuis des stratégies individuelles de survie économique et de distinction symbolique. La thèsemontre que la faiblesse de l’activité politique ouvrière, résultant de la crise socio-économiquepostsocialiste, est aggravée par les mécanismes paternalistes qui ont émergé pour atténuer leseffets de celle-ci. En même temps, la « démocratie oligarchique » des années 2000 a polarisé lavie politique selon un axe identitaire. Ces processus façonnent les modes de participationpolitique accessibles aux ouvriers : l’engagement politique se réduit à une vision antagoniste,qui clôt l’espace politique et favorise les projets autoritaires de lutte contre la corruption.
