The real (in) democracy : a psychosocial analysis of populism in the yellow vests movement

This thesis intends to assess the radical democratic character of a populist movement such as the Yellow Vests in France. Drawing on the field that has been called critical fantasy studies, the present research comprises an articulation between political theory and psychoanalysis. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first part discusses the very idea of radical democracy, notably its formulation by Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe, to conclude that it should be understood as ethics – i.e. as a way of facing reality and being aware of the radical contingency of social practices. The second part discusses the identification processes in mass movements. We exploit psychosocial interviews with protestors from the Yellow Vests and Jacques Lacan’s psychoanalytic reflections to claim that desire is the key concept to think of collective identities. Nonetheless, we also claim that the fantasmatic dynamics of desire are incompatible with the ethics of radical democracy. To continue our analysis of the Yellow Vests, the third part critically assesses two psychoanalytic metaphors that have been used by Laclau and others to describe populism: the metaphor of populism as a symptom and the metaphor of populism as sublimation. Going back to the works of Freud and Lacan, we argue that the two metaphors shall be integrated to differentiate between undemocratic and radical democratic popular identities. Notwithstanding, we conclude that the frontier separating radical democratic from undemocratic modes of identification is blurred, and that if there are ethical potentialities within the Yellow Vests movement, they will be constantly haunted by undemocratic fantasies.
