Doing ‘Russian-Germanness’ : performativity and co-ethnic belongings in the context of post-Soviet migration to Germany

The thesis examines the performative acts through which ethno-national group constructions come to be perceived and experienced as stable social realities. Its main argument is that ethno-national group categories have a performative power: they actually do something, contributing to create and sustain the groups they apparently designate. Even though they are only constructions of the social world, they are experienced as seemingly essential things in the world. Based on this theoretical insight, the thesis proposes to study ethnic belonging as a performative doing. This doing is examined on the basis of the empirical case of co-ethnic migration from the former Soviet Union to Germany. Drawing on ethnographic field research, the thesis explores how co-ethnic belonging – or, more concretely ‘Russian-Germanness’ – is performatively accomplished through the interplay between discursive, material, and corporeal acts. It notably sheds light on the identification practices of administrative agents, ethno-political entrepreneurs, migrants, material objects, and devices that collectively participate in this doing. Through the reiterative effort of coherence-making and re-adjustment of these heterogeneous actors and entities, co-ethnic group identities crystallize into a seemingly natural being. At the same time, the analysis reveals that this being is never fully accomplished, it necessarily remains incomplete and thus open to re-articulation. The thesis hence proposes an analytical framework allowing to explore the permanent, unresolved tension between de-stabilization and re-stabilization of ethnic group constructions in a context of transnational migration.
La thèse étudie les actes performatifs à travers lesquels les constructions ethno-nationales sont perçues et éprouvées comme réalités stables. Son argument central est que les catégories et discours ethno-nationaux ont un pouvoir performatif : ils font quelque chose, contribuant à créer et maintenir les groupes ou communautés qu’ils semblent désigner. Même s’il s’agit de constructions du monde, elles sont vécues comme réalités dans le monde. Sur la base de cet argument, la thèse propose d’analyser les appartenances ethniques comme un « doing » (faire) performatif. Ce doing est étudié à travers le cas empirique des migrations co-ethniques de l’ancienne Union Soviétique vers l’Allemagne. A partir d’enquêtes de terrain ethnographiques, la thèse examine les actes discursifs, matériels, et corporels qui contribuent à la mise en œuvre performative de l’appartenance co-ethnique – ou plus concrètement de l’appartenance « Russe-Allemande ». Elle étudie notamment les pratiques d’identification d’agents administratifs, d’entrepreneurs ethno-politiques, de migrants, mais aussi d’objets et de dispositifs matériels, qui participent collectivement à ce travail performatif. L’effort réitératif de mise en cohérence et de réajustement de ces acteurs hétérogènes contribue à la cristallisation des identités de groupe comme des « êtres » apparemment naturels. Cependant, l’analyse montre aussi que cet « être » n’est jamais accompli, il reste nécessairement incomplet et ouvert à la ré-articulation. Ainsi, la thèse propose un cadre d’analyse mettant en relief la tension permanente entre dé-stabilisation et re-stabilisation des constructions ethniques dans un contexte de migration transnationale.
