Identities and artistic circulations : the art of Colombian women artists in a transitional period (1958-1977)

Colombia began its democratic transition during the period of the National Front (1958-1974), where a jo political administration agreement between the main political parties, the Liberal Party and the Conservati Party, was set up. This alliance was endorsed by implementation of female suffrage and execution of t modernization project intending to get the country out of poverty. This context favored t internationalization of Colombian art and the visibility of women artists' works. 1958-1977 was a turni point: women went to University in their masses and entered the labor market, while simultaneou guerrilla groups emerged, and the military power spread over the country. Although women's stat improved, it was also weakened by this political conjuncture. The main purpose of this thesis is understand how the political transition and the social modernization stimulated women's integration into t Colombian art world. Based on unpublished archives and interviews with the protagonists of the local artis panorama, this thesis aims to prove that women have contributed to Colombia's art modernization innovating in artistic creation, by promoting crafts, by valorizing private sphere and household objects, a by empowering the female body. The journey to artistic modernity embraced the quest for women artis identity. Travelling was one of the main channels to nourish their search. Opting for an interdisciplinary a comparative approach, this thesis suggests a gendered analysis of the Colombian art construction within political and social pivotal transitional period.
La Colombie initie sa transition démocratique au cours de la période du Front national (1958-1974), qui voit le Parti libéral et le Parti conservateur sceller un accord de cogestion du pays. Cette alliance est avalisée par la mise en place du suffrage féminin et l’adoption d’un projet modernisateur visant à sortir le pays de la pauvreté. Ce contexte favorise l’internationalisation de l’art colombien, ainsi que la visibilité et la circulation des travaux de femmes artistes. La période 1958-1977 est un tournant : les femmes entrent alors massivement dans l’enseignement supérieur et sur le marché du travail, tandis qu’émergent des groupes guérilleros, et que s’abat la répression du gouvernement. Ainsi, si le statut des femmes s’améliore, il est toutefois également mis à mal par cette conjoncture politique. Comprendre la manière dont les processus de transition politique et de modernisation sociale ont stimulé l’intégration des femmes au monde de l’art colombien : tel est l’objectif de cette étude. En se fondant sur un travail d’archives et des entretiens inédits avec des actrices du monde de l’art, cette thèse veut prouver que les femmes ont contribué à la modernisation culturelle de la Colombie en innovant sur le plan artistique, en promouvant l’artisanat, en réinvestissant l’espace privé, et en se réappropriant le corps féminin. La quête de modernité artistique recouvre la quête identitaire des créatrices. Les voyages sont des moyens de nourrir leur recherche. Privilégiant une méthode interdisciplinaire et comparative, la thèse propose ainsi une analyse de construction genrée de l’art colombien dans une période déterminante de transition politique et sociale du pays.
