Homopoliticus : socialisation politique et construction du rapport au politique des gays et lesbiennes en France

Abstract : This thesis raises the question of how homosexuality participates to the process of political socialization. It considers as much the individual construction of homosexual identity as the question of the individual’s relation to politics, conceived of in terms of how she relates to the social world and to institutional politics. The analysis is based on a corpus of 90 in-depth interviews mixing life story and comprehensive approaches. The interviewees recruitment relies on a principle of high diversification considering gender, race, religiosity, social class. This work first underlines the importance of the social gap produced by heteronormativity at the individual level, through the notion of “unsuccessful (primary) socialization”. It then higlights four forms of homosexual identity (affirmation, conformation, uncontentionalization, ghettoisation) which depends on the individual’s relation to gender, homosexual visibility, and his/her feeling of belonging. The more or less contentious relation to the social world appears fundamental of these forms of identity, which are interpreted through a logic of social compensation. Finally, this work contributes to explain gays and lesbian left/right orientation, showing the interaction between primary and secondary political socialization. It underlines that leftist position relies on a mechanism of coherence while rightist orientation relies on a mechanism of hierarchisation of social identities. This work finally contends that gays and lesbians leftist leaning as a group - known as the sexuality gap in the literature - rests upon mechanisms of political transformation through homosexuality.
