Vers une éthique plurielle : le théologique à l'appui du libéralisme

Abstract : This thesis aims to study the ways in which ethical norms are elaboratedin liberal democracy. I argue that one rejuvenating channel for norm-buildingconsists of re-evaluating the expression of both private experiences andtheological knowledge in the public sphere. In renewing conventional approaches to religion, my ambition is toreflect on another grammar that could contribute to defining the commongood: theology. Theology can be tentatively defined as a rationality of beliefsand religious experiences, based on an ethics of responsibility, and expressedthrough various discursive registers. Apprehending religion this way allows toreconceptualise theology, which is no longer confined to a set of beliefs andconvictions which liberal thought tolerates, but can be conceived as a heuristictool in the work of “ethical creation”. Rather than a sum of convictions, theological reasoning provides conceptual and methodological keys to makesense of the individuals’ experiences. This move has important politicalimplications: given the salience of spiritual experiences in shaping individualethics, it seems crucial to render these experiences intelligible so that they canparticipate in the shaping of democratic ethics. Rather than claiming the publicrecognition of religions in the name of tolerance, this thesis thus aims touncover the liberal requirements of political theory (as formulated by JohnRawls) and make the case for a broadening of practical reason to a type ofrationality previously assigned to the private sphere. The thesis analyticallyidentifies four types of theological contribution to liberal democracy andsuggests three conditions of possibility for such contributions to be desirableand fruitful within public reason.
