Les étudiant-e-s parents. Enquête sur la norme de jeunesse dans l’enseignement supérieur français

Abstract : Only 4.4% of French students are parents: who are they? From a French perspective, their situation is paradoxical because they seem both young (as students) and adults (since they have the responsibility of a child or several children). This paradox is addressed thanks to a mixed method analysis using 80 semi-structured interviews with student parents, a case study, several archives and the secondary analysis of the OVE [Observatoire de la Vie Etudiante] 2016 database. The thesis focuses on three facets of being a student parents: public policies since the 1950s, student parents' social path and their everyday life. The analysis reveals that higher education public policies and administrations produce a youth norm, which assigns students to youth and thus creates the paradox of student parents. The neutral student, a fiction taken as a model to shape higher education policies and the everyday organisation of higher education institutions, is indeed a young person: s/he lacks financial independence, is full-time available for her/his studies and under the direct authority of his or her teachers. Student parents have various social profiles and not every one of them can easily fulfill these expectations. Student fathers from a higher class background are more easily able to respect this youth norm by means of their material conditions. Their success in their studies relies on the exploitation of their wife who provides most of the domestic labor, care work and mental workload in their couple.
