La notion d’échelles temporelles

Abstract : French debates on space have favored scales over time. Institutional creation, though, raises the issue of temporalities. This is the case of the French national institute for demographic studies (Ined). Its creation in 1945 links long (pronatalist influence), middle (scientific and demographic volontarism from the interwar period) and short-term history (the Liberation period, Alfred Sauvy's trajectory). Attention given to events combines contingency and randomness within a controlled explanatory model.
