An Intermediary of the Everyday: Continuum between Neighborhood Life, Politics and Mobilizations in Mexico City

This article studies the central role of the small hands of politics in Mexico City who build local and national political links in and from the neighborhood. The author proposes the notion of the intermediary of daily life : an inhabitant of the neighborhood who, through his insertion in networks of local sociability, a specific availability and his discrete (militant) know-how, accompanies his neighbors in their practice of politics and administration through an invisible and invisibilized work. By shifting the gaze from protest action to the routine of daily life, know-how is revealed that is generally invisible to militant groups, but also to the sociologist’s analytical toolbox : the ability to simply be there, but above all to remain there during a period of protest, to be always available and accessible to one’s neighbors, to manage the waiting period in mobilization and the relationship with the administration. From then on, waiting is a fundamental activist skill, just like the ability to speak out or use more technical know-how.
