Who’s the bull in the kraal? guerres et mémoire, guerre de mémoires dans l’Est de l’Ouganda : Guerres et mémoires et mémoires de guerre dans l'est de l'Ouganda

Abstract : This article focuses on the symbolic narratives of the memory of the Arrow Boys militiamen fallen in Eastern Uganda during the counter-insurgency led against the Lord’s Resistance Army (2003-2005). It intends to show that the representations of the past are not only a State matter. Indeed, official scripts coexist with conflicting and sometimes contradictory memories that all attempt to impose themselves in the public space. What is at stake here are less representations of the past than contemporary political stakes: the redefinition of power hierarchies between the center and its periphery, the relationships between political and military spheres and local domination strategies. In Teso, valorisation and oppressive memorial politics either used alternatively or simultaneously clearly show post-conflict issues of State domination and (re)affirmation of legitimate constraint monopoly.
