Le Nordeste dans la configuration sociale du Brésil contemporain

Abstract : The article begins with a description of the relative inequality in the Northeast as compared to other areas of Brazil. The states in this region have the highest levels of poverty, the lowest levels of development and the greatest income inequality compared to states in other parts of Brazil. The remainder of the article analyzes the region’s relative political power and economic situation as well as the movement of people and Brazilian nationalism. The initial focus is on the history of the region’s development, marked by the power of the conservative oligarchs and protest movements on one hand, and the town and country planning carried out by the nation’s capital on the other. Next it turns to the evolution of the dominant powers with a focus on the current policies in the fight against poverty and the debate over redefining development policies.
