Pauvreté et politique sociale sous la présidence Obama : vers une tentative d'évaluation

All recent socio-economic indicators indicate that the increased poverty in the United States is no longer limited to minorities and single mothers living in urban ghettos. Many families living comfortably in classy suburbs have found themselves marginalized by unemployment and the real estate crisis. The social policies developed by Presidents Clinton (the reform of 1996) and George W. Bush (with his faith-based initiative) are inadequate in the face of social problems of a magnitude not seen since the 1930s. President Obama addressed the unemployment issue, the real estate crisis and health care but the actions he took had only a marginal impact on the nature and extent of poverty. Moreover, the issue of the poor has been absent from official government discussions leading some to believe that Obama, fearful of losing white votes, does not want to be identified as the candidate of the poor and African Americans.
