Sites de rencontres et champs des possibles

Abstract : As a part of a larger research project on the social usage of online dating websites, this article analyses the structure of online dating “web” in France. Based on an inventory of more than thousand sites, it describes not only the diversity of platforms but also how these are organised and how they differ depending on the target population. Given the scientific context – where online dating is generally analysed through majority use and dominant sites – the objective is to show the different ways in which the social characteristics of the target population determine how the users are approached and what services they will be offered. Departing from the idea that the understanding of the interface is a prerequisite to the comprehension of its effective usage, this article presents an analysis of the social areas that different sites create through their architecture, design and discursive frame.
