The Geography of External Voting: The 2011 Tunisian Election Abroad

Abstract : In October 2011, more than 200 000 Tunisians abroad participated in the election of the Constituent Assembly, along with their fellow citizens in Tunisia. Out of 217 representatives, the Tunisians abroad elected 18 from 5 extraterritorial constituencies. Based on detailed and original results of the election, this paper presents and discusses innovative maps of the voting behavior of the Tunisians abroad. It highlights the similarities between the Tunisians in Tunisia and abroad, and the differences among latter’s depending on their place of residence at the country level and at the local level (for Paris and its suburbs and for the Arab Gulf and the Middle East). By doing so, the author emphasizes the relevance of electoral geography for the analysis of the formation of transnational political opinions.
