Afficher ses titres de noblesse scolaire ? : Stratégies de présentation de soi des élèves nationaux et internationaux dans les grandes écoles françaises

Abstract : This article examine the relationship that exists between students from four elite French schools (Polytechnique, ENS Ulm, HEC, Sciences Po) known collectively as the grandes écoles (GE) and the identities as students from these elite establishments. The sanctioning function exercised by the highly competitive entrance exams into these elite schools is well known: a title of academic nobility will follow the admitted students throughout their entire lives (Bourdieu, 1989). Being admitted thus signifies an automatic change in social status for the student. But how is this statutory change experienced? Our data (140 semi-directive interviews conducted with students of the four GE) show that the identity change entails confrontation with the perception of self by the other. The dramaturgical analysis of organizational identities adopted by national and international students lead us to distinguish between two ideal-type relations to identity. When an instrumental relationship to identity is activated, all students display their organizational affiliation; however, when a communicational relationship is activated in a mixed context, national students conceal their organizational affiliation whereas international students display their academic identity. These various strategies of self presentation take full meaning when one considers on the one hand the organizational conditions of integration and access that characterize these two population in the French grandes écoles, and on the other the contrasted visibility and symbolic weight of these schools on the national and the international scenes.
