Penser la périodisation et les relations internationales : l’apport du « développement inégal et combiné »

Abstract : Rethinking periodisation and international relations: the contribution of “uneven and combined development” - International relations challenge the way we think about historical epochs. Geopolitical theories on the one hand and connected histories on the other have provided different answers to the issue of global periodisation. But their mutual exclusivity limits the scope of their analyses. Leon Trotsky’s “uneven and combined development” offers a methodological fix for articulating traditional dichotomies (macro and micro, materiality and subjectivity, structure and contingency) in periodising. In this perspective, global epochs result from the interaction of unevenly developed societies. The combined effect of these relationships, however, is contingent and unpredictable: it depends on the dynamic of social classes within each society.
