L'expérience sociale du handicap

Abstract : Combining inputs from the sociology of disability and the sociology of inequalities, this contribution develops an original framework to account for disability as a social experience. While theoretical debates in disability studies have evolved towards a discussion of the ontology of disability, I offer to get back to the social model’s initial invitation to shift the focus of analysis towards the social dimension of disability. I apprehend the latter within the perspective of a sociology of inequalities, taking into account the subjectivity of social actors and the intersectionality of their experience. The framework I put forward articulates these dimensions. Disability as a social experience thus combines five parameters: on top of the three classical weberian criteria commonly used to characterize one’s position in social stratification (material resources, social status, power), I add the identification of the impairment and the mode of existence.
