Generazioni sociali, prospettive di vita e sostenibilità del welfare

Abstract : «Sustainability» is a central theme for analysing welfare state reforms, being based largely on the principles of intergenerational solidarity that require promises made today to be maintained after forty or sixty years. Pension reforms aim to correct these imbalances, bur rewriting the contract between generations is a delicate operation, as we cannot know who will actually pay the highest price. This contribution analyses the generational imbalances and the size of the fracture between generations, above all in relation to the sustainability of social protection systems and the distribution of wealth in France and, to a lesser extent, in Italy. French society (and Italian society too, though differently) is facing strong generational fluctuations whose long-term consequences could be the destabilisation of the present system of social protection.
