Italie : La présence du passé

Abstract : The historiographic debate that has been going on in Italy for at least fifteen years has encroached upon not only the structures of the political system (Parliament and the parties, public opinion and the media), but also the culture of contemporary historians. We attend a reinvention of skills and sensitivity, also required by the increase of available sources. In the political history of Republican Italy, interdisciplinary currents have appeared enabling new questions on the foundations of national identity and the characteristics and transformations of republican democracy to come to the fore. Renewed interpretations, between a declared revisionism and a return to the "long" national history, show a strong interest in the crisis of republican institutions, the decadence of traditional parties and the delegitimization of politicians vying for making Italy not a European anomaly but a "laboratory" of mutation towards present day public opinion democracies.
