L’université et les pouvoirs de la langue : Réarticuler l’ordre politique et linguistique en Roumanie au sortir du communisme

Abstract : Examining the controversies that arose around the issue of the re-opening of a public Hungarian-speaking university in Cluj-Napoca/Kolozsvár (Romania), this article aims at questioning the political, institutional, and social conditions under which this cause emerged during a peculiar time, the early months of the post-Communist era. After having underlined the historical repertoires invested in December 1989 by identity entrepreneurs, who developed language as an indicator of the new status of the Hungarian group in the post-Communist political order, the article examines the modalities of the crystallization of the issues at stake, the language, and the university. Compared to other research works that dealt with similar issues during the 20th century, the article explores how the configuration under examination offers its own specificities, because of its insertion into regime change, and because of the historical trajectories framed by the competition between two states over the control of a given territory. In a context of uncertainties, short time lapses show the redeployment of linguistic ideologies that have been crystallized along competing national constructions (Hungarian and Romanian), fueled by a reversal of positions of domination, and by a mitigated process of social equalization undertaken in Romania during the Communist era.
