Mémoire familiale, filiation et parentalité en milieux populaires

Abstract : Adapted from a DEA degree thesis on the kinship of a couple with regard to one or the other lineage in working class environments, this paper proposes to demonstrate how the experience of parenthood raises many issues of family identity for young parents. The birth of a child is often a bonding factor between generations ; it is also synonymous of a review by oneself of one’s own family past. Furthermore, even if the passing on of family memory is not an educational factor in working class environments, parents are careful to ensure that their child is not deprived of bearings that knowledge of the family past could provide. Children are in fact the main recipients, but also actors ; their expectations and questions cause parents to question their own role in the transmission process. Between negotiation, contradiction and emotional reconciliation, the advent of a child questions the position of everyone in the kinship group.
