Safe and Sound: Searching for a "Good Environment" in Abul Fazl Enclave, Delhi

Laurent Gayer

Abstract

This chapter aims to understand the history and politics of this peculiar Muslim locality through its residents' search for a "good environment" (achha mahaul), a common trend among Delhi's middle-class Muslims. However, as ubiquitous as it may be, this quest for a "proper" social and physical environment takes various declinations from one individual to another and may be addressing ecological, moral, or security concerns, all imperfectly conveyed by notions of "ghettoisation" or "self-segregation".
