The twentieth century witnessed considerable progress in international law. Facing the number and gravity of cases involving the destruction of civilian populations, legal experts have established new judicial norms to sanction and prevent such crimes such as the Geneva Convention and, most recently, the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court which entered into force in 2002 and covers war crimes, crimes against humanity and crimes of genocide.
