L’engagement de François Mitterrand au Moyen-Orient
Abstract
Probably no other Fifth Republic president has been as involved in the Middle East as was François Mitterrand. During the Israeli siege of Beirut in 1982, or the Iraqi occupation of Kuwait in 1990-91, he tried repeatedly to achieve a political solution to the crisis. This commitment on dangerous grounds was sustained despite the threat of terrorism, that stroke France on its soil (in August 1982 or September 1986) or in the region.
François Mitterrand est sans doute le président de la Ve République à avoir le plus engagé la France au Moyen-Orient. Durant le siège de Beyrouth par Israël, à l’été 1982, ou l’occupation irakienne du Koweït, d’août 1990 à février 1991, le chef de l’État se mobilise personnellement pour ménager une solution politique à la crise, avec des résultats contrastés. Il s’expose sur ces dossiers périlleux, sans en être dissuadé par le terrorisme moyen-oriental, qui frappe durement à Paris (en août 1982 ou septembre 1986) ou dans la région.
