Les dilemmes d’une orientation juste…

Abstract : This paper investigates the various meanings of the apparently straightforward notion of “fair” academic and vocational tracking. From its foundation, vocational guidance, to promote equality of opportunity, relies upon the principle of meritocracy, which raises some problems. These are linked to the definition of merit itself, to its possible causal imputation, and also to the hierarchy between the various academic trajectories which allows identifying in fine educational inequalities. This reflexive paper relies upon the bulk of sociological research analysing the social inequalities in academic achievement and tracking.
