The article discusses the historiography of the French state in the 19th and 20th centuries. The article examines tendencies in French historiography on the state including the methodological propositions advanced by scholar Pierre Rosanvallon that included the democratic Leviathan, the economic regulator, welfare, and the constitutor of the social, the state as studied by political science, economic and social history, and a contemporary political history that seriously considered the concept of the state. The article discusses the study of various forms of state force and intervention in economic and social areas, bureaucracy, and juridical sciences.
