« Une « création continue » ? : L’Indochine, le Maghreb et l’Union française

Abstract : It makes sense to study the French Union experience at a moment when the evolution from Empires to Nation-States is no longer conceived as linear. Resolutely following a “history-from-above” approach, this paper explains how and why this experiment failed. First, the North African protectorates were not included in the French Union institutions. Second, the associated States of Indochina vied between them to achieve moreindependence. Third, French authorities were slow to implement the institutions of the French Union. The main source used in this paper is Cherif Mecheri’s private archive: Mecheri was the key figure of French Union affairs among the Presidential Staff.
