Interview, first paragraphs. FPS: While outright victories are rare—so far—what are your reactions to the recent win by Jean-Marie Le Pen's National Front party in Vitrolles? NM: The victory of the NF candidate, Catherine Mégret, who stood in for her husband Bruno, the Front's deputy leader, in a rerun of the municipal bye-election of Vitrolles, was not a surprise. In the presidential élections of 1988 and 1995 Le Pen's party came in first with 29.7 percent and 28.4 percent of the valid votes. Moreover, in the 1993 parliamentary élections, Bruno Mégret would have been elected deputy had Vitrolles not been part of a larger constituency including Marignane. In Vitrolles alone, his score was 33.9 percent in the first round and 55.8 percent in the second.
