The Old World: patrimonial populism

Abstract

The mix of economic and cultural insecurity pervading Europe today favors the spread of populist tendencies. “Patrimonial populism” harnesses the people’s fear and channels it, succeeding even in appearing to defend democracy and individual freedom.
