La guerre froide, une périodisation impossible ?

Abstract : Whereas the Cold War is often seen as one unit or even as the “envelope” covering the entire history of the second half of the 20th century, its periodization remains highly complex. Indeed, it depends on the definition given to the Cold War, which is variable. Furthermore, if we go beyond the confrontation between Washington and Moscow, it appears that the periodization has different manifestations according to the spaces involved, especially if the scale is changed. It remains true, nonetheless, despite the current tendency in historiography to shift its focus far off strategic confrontations, that the major turning points in the Cold War as they were peceived by contemporary historians are most often still valid.
