The keyword of the indian political history is not revolution; it is reform, a word which, in the course of time, has been bracketed together with various epithets. The reform was, at first, religious when, from the beginning of the 19th century, in the face of propaganda by Christian missionaries, enlightened Brahmins endeavoured to moderniza Hinduism - claiming to restore its original purity to give it a quasi-monotheistic version.
