Entre témoignage et biométrie : la production du « réfugié » au Burkina Faso

Abstract : Between testimony and biometrics: the production of “the refugee” in Burkina Faso
This article examines the introduction of biometric registration processes for Malian refugees living in Burkina Faso. In it, I explore how this technology, based on the supposedly objective truths of bodies, impacts other modes of refugee identification, particularly those based on testimony and social authentication. I also look at whether biometrics change the ways in which the refugees themselves construct their social identity. Finally, I argue that the introduction of biometric registration for refugees in Burkina Faso has not radically impacted how the status of refugee is assigned and the social category constructed.
