When populists govern, Bolivia, Ecuador and Populism

Résumé

This chapter aims at explaining the populist political strategies implemented by Rafael Correa and Evo Morales. The formation of their respective majorities was based on different ideological stances. Therefore, the first thesis of the chapter is the following: even if both governments adopted populist strategies and were both situated on the Left, they were ideologically different. I provide an empirical argument against Cas Mudde’s thesis which presupposes a common ideological background to all forms of populism. These different national strategies are, however, projected internationally along one common ideological line: international ecology is considered by both diplomacies as a conflict between the people and the wealthiest countries.
