L’exception française

Abstract : France is one of the European countries where the far-right has registered good electoral results for about 15 years. The French “exceptionalism” is rooted in old political traditions (counter-revolutionary legacy ; imperial temptations), in a political history marked by the painful memory of the Algerian war, in a political system that has experienced long periods of cohabitation and, in a republican and statist culture very reluctant to accept the deepening of ethnic and cultural differences as well as the crisis of the welfare state.
