Abstract : Women live longer than men. However, women consistently report poorer health than men. Furthermore, social inequalities in health are less pronounced in women than in men. Health issues sometimes reverse gender hierarchy and thus question gender studies. Studying these gender differences is all the more delicate since health combines biological and social aspects. These research questions asked in the 1970s in the United States still organize the international literature on gender and health and arise in France for fifteen years.
