L'épreuve du crédit

Abstract : How do banks lend? This article traces the course of interviews between clients and financial advisors specializing in consumer loans. It shows that most loans are granted or denied based on economic, technical, and legal constraints taken into consideration by bank advisors. These constraints depict the ideal client as stable and gainfully employed. However, in some cases, the personal judgment of bank advisors comes into play, and clients then need to explain their “projects,” while at the same time inspiring the personal confidence of their advisors.
