Réduire la dissonance identitaire dans les interactions avec autrui. Peut-on être chômeur et militant à la fois ?

Abstract : In order to study construction of identities, social scientists have given their preference to narrative approaches and biographical methods. This paper explores a complementary trail, grounded on the analysis of social interactions and on a dialogic perspective. The latter is necessary in order to consider as serious matter the theorization of identity negotiation at both theoretical and methodological levels. The analysis is based on a specific case of identity dissonance. This stems out when persons combine several activities which common norms consider as incompatible. Namely, this is the case for unemployed persons who are simultaneously under the obligation to seek a job and also getting involved in volunteer activities. Conflict of values and legitimacies arise during the interactions which hence focus on reducing identity dissonance. Four types of interactions are singled out considering the nature of the significant other in the interaction. The unemployed may be facing professionals representing an official body; facing a close relative; facing a fellow volunteer; facing the poorly significant common “other”. Observations data show that the process of identity construction results from a series of repeated trial situations met by the individuals. Such trials are regulated by more or less constraining norms. They also include different negotiations which take part the continuous and contradictory processes of identity construction.
