La mobilisation partisane de droite : Les logiques organisationnelles et sociales d’adhésion à l’UMP

Abstract : In view of the strong party mobilization in the run-up to Nicolas Sarkozy’s electoral success in 2007, this article analyzes the organizational and social logic behind UMP membership based on a survey of UMP members conducted at a congress in November 2004. It emphasizes the particularities of UMP party linkage as formulated by the party organization itself : compared to PS members, UMP members are less committed to internal party matters, and in many cases first get involved in the party in the context of (above all, presidential) elections. As far as social logic are concerned, this article underlines the importance of ties based on prior acquaintance and the persistence of traditional cleavages (religion vs. secularism, public vs. private sector), and stresses the need to study the white collar component of the French right-wing organization by taking a closer look at the world of the numerous, if rather atypical, white collar members of the UMP.
