Beyond the Deficit Perspective: Family Ties and Residential Choice of Upwardly Mobile Turkish-Germans

Christine Barwick

Résumé

n modern urban societies, due to means of transportation as well as communication, we can expect that local social ties do not play a major role for intra-urban mobility and neigh borhood selection. The decision where to live in a city should be rather unaffected by considerations of spatial proximity to friends or family members. That this reasoning is more complicated will be shown with the example of upwardly mobile Turkish-Germans in Berlin. Stayers - people living in a socioeconomically disadvantaged area - are compared to movers, who have moved from a disadvantaged to a more advantaged neighborhood. Particularly family ties directly influence whether or not a person will move out of or stay in a neighborhood with a low socioeconomic status.
