La caméra, auxiliaire de l'historien. Archives et récits d'une conseillère agricole

Abstract : Documentary filmmaking offers an opportunity for historians to reflect and contribute to all the operations that define their profession: documentary critique, explanatory construction and representation of the past. Examining the practices of documentary filmmaking make it possible to discover and compile new sources, to better understand the situations observed, and to compare different types of writing. To develop and connect these three aspects, I review my experience making a documentary film entitled Le nom des fleurs (“The name of flowers”) during my years as a doctoral candidate in history. Meeting an agricultural agent who spent nearly three decades leading numerous female extension groups gave me an opportunity to reflect on the production of a documentary film on her professional life. The film seeks to place the unique career of one agricultural agent in the context of the history of women in agriculture.
