, Il ne faut certes pas exagérer le facteur « Dominions » dans la politique d'« appeasement » des années 1930 et lors de la crise de Munich. Le Dominion Office, créé en 1925, Moyen-Orient 238 , et le Japon qui menaçait les positions britanniques en Asie et dans le Pacifique

, il ne voulait plus jamais voir le Canada et ne s'intéressa plus guère à l'Empire ? alors qu'il avait voulu être secrétaire aux Colonies et poursuivre l'oeuvre impériale de son père 239 . Toutefois, selon Andrew Stewart, la Nouvelle-Zélande et l'Australie (avec des réticences), seules, auraient combattu en cas de guerre en 1938, décidée pour une cause peu mobilisatrice (empêcher la minorité allemande « discriminée » de Tchécoslovaquie de rejoindre l'Allemagne), alors que les dominions plaidaient pour des concessions à Hitler. Même en 1939, la décision sud-africaine a failli mener à une guerre civile, même si, en définitive, la guerre fut la « finest hour » de l'identité britannique en Afrique du Sud 240 . L'Irlande du Nord fut exclue du Conscription Act. La neutralité de l'Eire évitait le risque d'une guerre civile et d'une transformation radicale d'un jeune État rural, et de donner un prétexte pour un « retour » des Anglais. Mais elle fut presque plus favorable à ceux-ci qu'un engagement irlandais. Le renseignement allemand y était faible et vite intercepté, Chamberlain qui avait été furieux de l'attitude des Canadiens et des Australiens lors de la conférence impériale de 1932

, Europe a permis de reconsidérer les terribles réalités de la guerre qui y fut menée et de mieux inclure la « Solution finale » dans l'histoire de la guerre. La sortie du communisme a fait mettre l'accent sur les souffrances des pays de l'Est infligées par l'Union soviétique dès 1939 et généralisé le sentiment que 1945 à l'Est fut autre chose qu'une libération et une victoire de la liberté sur le totalitarisme 242 . Dans un contexte de renouveau de la « special relationship » durant la « Global War on Terror », il a été de bon ton de mettre l'accent sur ce qui a, dans l'histoire
