Les élections européennes de juin 2009 en France : élections de second ordre ou élections de reclassement ?

Abstract : In France, the European elections held on 7 June 2009 took place in the context of great tension between ‘nationalisation’ and ‘Europeanisation’. Despite a lacklustre and low-key campaign that ended with low voter turnout, the elections in fact contained a few surprises compared to the classic logic of ‘mid-term elections’. The majority party, the UMP, and its allies performed fairly well. The vote of the main opposition party, the PS, collapsed, benefiting the ecological forces, which won an almost equal number of votes. Finally, extremist discontent was not strengthened by the European election vote.
