Les équilibres eau-terre-population au Sahel

Abstract : This is a three-variable equation. The first is the result of climate change that has affected the Sahelian zone since the 1970s and it is characterized by a significant and recurrent rainfall deficit. The second is the consequence of the first insofar as the northern limit of the Sahel has fallen by 250 kilometers for sixty years, thus reducing by more than 500,000 square kilometers the area of land that can be exploited by farmers or herders. The third is demographic: the population of this shrinking strip of land has grown from 40 million in the 1970s to 135 million in 2020 and could reach 330 million in 2050. Arithmetically, the balances have been broken and the instability that prevails in these regions is the consequence. It therefore seems imperative to reflect in depth on each of the factors in the equation in order to identify ways to influence them. In the long term, this requires the energy transition; in the medium term, through family planning policies; in the short term by the introduction of methods of intensification of agriculture and livestock, through more developed irrigation techniques, and up to the housing of herds. It would be a new Green Revolution, adapted to the African context.
