Primacy of the masculine in the engraved arts of the Sahara. Pastoral nomadism and societies

Résumé
A reflection on the under-representation of female persons compared to male persons in the rock engravings of the central and southern Sahara. The fifty-eight female subjects listed are part of graphic expressions that are integrated into three vast geographical areas, and are linked to three distinct chrono-cultural frames. Livestock and large species of wild fauna occupy a predominant place in this Saharan iconography. These data invite to attribute these figurative manifestations to mobile pastroralists groups who drew mainly their inspiration from the world of the bush, and not from the world of campsites to which the women were attached, and which, consequently, received exceptionally their attention.
Réflexion sur la sous-représentation des personnages féminins par rapport aux personnages masculins dans les gravures rupestres du Sahara central et méridional. Les cinquante huit sujets féminins répertoriés participent d’expressions graphiques s’intégrant dans trois vastes aires géographiques, et se rattachant à trois horizons chrono-culturels distincts. Les animaux d’élevage et ceux de la grande faune sauvage occupent une place prépondérante dans cette iconographie saharienne. Ces données invitent à attribuer ces manifestations figuratives à des groupes de pasteurs mobiles qui puisaient l’essentiel de leur inspiration dans l’univers de la brousse, et non pas dans l’univers des campements auxquelles les femmes étaient attachées, laquelle gent féminine ne retint, de fait, qu’exceptionnellement leur attention.
