Patronage, refuge, ancrage : l'internationalisation des Alaouites (Syrie, Turquie, Liban) face au conflit syrien

Abstract : The internationalization of the Alawites is based on antagonistic practices, which arerevealed, hampered or favored by the Syrian conflict beginning in 2011. For the ‘Īdfamily, historical clients of the Syrian state, the crisis is an opportunity. From the JabalMohsen in Tripoli, Lebanon, they capture political resources in Syria and activate theirAlawite militia against their rivals in the Sunni district of Bab Tebbaneh. Their nuisanceactivities fuel the dynamics of identity polarization associated with the Syrian conflictand its transnational ramifications. For others though, the crisis means the loss of theSyrian refuge. Some sheikhs used to send their disciples to Syria to study the esotericAlawite doctrine. The Syrian refuge regulated the tensions encountered in Turkey andLebanon, and saved the actors from costly politicization. The crisis, finally, producesunprecedented dynamics specific to the actors who advocate for cultural recognitionand work for an anchoring of the Alawites in their respective national contexts. Theydo so with the help of Alawite transnational networks leading to the diasporas inEurope and South America. Patronage, refuge and anchoring are three scales ofAlawite internationalization. They invite us to go beyond the identity entrepreneurmodel, and to consider the existence of actors who tend to resist the politicization ofidentity and to preserve the state-centered nature of the environment. Furthermore, they justify the use of an anthropological approach to identify the multiple interactionsbetween the positioning of individuals, the definition of their identity category, andtheir international practices.
